Former IGP: Gangs running rampant in country.
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 ― There are over 20 illegal gangs actively recruiting members in Malaysia, according to Tan Sri Musa Hassan.
The former Inspector-General of Police was reported by Malay daily Berita Harian as saying gang-related crimes were growing along with the gangs.
"As long as vices exist, illegal gangs will be around and they will fight among themselves to control a certain area which usually leads to fights and murders.
"The police have to be firm in combating these gangs especially their leadership. Action has to be taken instantly to avoid the younger generation from joining them," he was quoted as saying.
Musa added that many Malaysians were afraid of reporting the gangs for fear of reprisals, but noted that there were laws that could afford them protection.
There have been a spate of shooting cases since January.
A moneylender in Setapak was shot by two men in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight on Wednesday, adding to the list.
Most cases were identified as related to gang violence.
