Popular 90s singer grateful after given a public housing flat by DBKL following reports of her plight.
PETALING JAYA: It had been a long time since people heard or seen the name Sahara Yaacob in a newspaper, let alone on a marquee, but thinks are looking up for her as Berita Harian (BH) reported yesterday.
The singer most popularly known as the Tina Turner of Malaysia during her heydays in the 1990s, has moved into a People's Housing Project (PPR) flat near Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
This followed some recent coverage of her being destitute and living with her sister for the past two years.
"I thought I'd live to the end of my days in my late sister's storeroom," Sahara told the Bahasa Malaysia daily.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) decided to help her out after hearing of her predicament, and made the arrangements to move her into her new home.
"The most important thing for me is to build a new life. I don't mind sleeping on the floor as I'm used to the hard life," Sahara said of the flat which is yet to be furnished.
"I'd like to thank everyone who helped and supported me," she was quoted as saying in BH.
According to the report, Sahara said she felt embarrassed for depending too much on her relatives, who are also not well-off, and was even willing to go hungry at times so as not to burden her sister's family.
Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported that Sahara is slated to perform in a comeback concert next year, but no further details were available on the show.
